From the director

As Mercyhealth’s EMS medical director, my role is to ensure a high-quality EMS system is in place. I am proud to say that we have an extremely high-quality EMS system in our area.

Our EMS providers spend countless hours undergoing initial and refresher training. They frequently participate in high-fidelity simulation training and run reviews. We have a robust quality assurance program in place and some of the most advanced protocols available to pre-hospital providers.

We see our EMS partners as an invaluable extension of the exceptional medical care our patients receive in the hospital. From the time 9-1-1 is called, our emergency medical dispatchers immediately begin medical treatment. Dispatchers have saved multiple lives by talking someone through procedures to treat choking or cardiac arrest. At the same time, our EMT, IV-tech and paramedic services are rapidly dispatched, and care directed by the emergency medical dispatcher is continued until their arrival. Once our EMS providers arrive on scene, patients receive the most high-tech, pre-hospital health care possible.

Our EMS physicians are on-call 24/7 with MD-1 for phone consults or an on-scene response if needed by the EMS providers. Close communication with the receiving hospital ensures hospital staff is ready to provide the best care possible upon the patient’s arrival.

Mercyhealth’s goal is to offer a comprehensive, organized EMS system to deal with any emergency. EMS system improvements funded by Mercyhealth include:

  • 12-lead EKG machines
  • LUCAS 2 mechanical CPR machine
  • King Vision video intubation equipment
  • Mobile refrigerators to cool IV fluids for cardiac arrest patients
  • A $1.2 million high-fidelity simulation and training center
  • Mobile simulation ambulance

We are proud of our EMS partners and their service to the community. Our EMS physicians spend considerable hours training and providing on-scene care in a true partnership with our EMS providers.

I live in our service region and travel extensively. I have the confidence that, if I or my family needed EMS in our system, it would be of the highest quality.
